Aircraft Part Conditions: AR, SV, RP, & OH

In an industry as strictly regimented as aerospace, there are countless rules and regulations to go along with the many aircraft parts available. Furthermore, there are also a broad range of part conditions. The part conditions we will discuss in this blog are As Removed (AR), Serviceable (SV), Repaired (RP), and Overhaul (OH).

As Removed (AR)

AR parts are components that were removed directly from an aircraft. Unsurprisingly, this is where the name “as removed” comes from. Sometimes these parts will come with a statement of the reason it was removed, but more often than not the part will simply come with a removal tag and a trace. When buying AR parts, be aware that they may not necessarily be repairable. For functional tests or repairs, these parts should go to a certified MRO.

Serviceable (SV)

Serviceable condition parts are interlinked with repaired condition parts, but with a few differences depending on where you look. If a part is considered serviceable, it has been functional tested in accordance with OEM specifications. Furthermore, you will know that the part will come with an airworthiness certification depending on the region you are in. In the United States, this certification is known as the FAA 8130. Generally speaking, these parts will not come with a teardown, just an airworthiness certificate stating that it has passed functional testing and is able to be installed. However, this will vary based on the MRO.

Repaired (RP)

A part considered to be repaired is a serviceable part that requires a little more work. In repaired parts, minor piece parts are used to upgrade the part to serviceable condition to meet functional test requirements. Piece parts used in these repairs include aircraft gaskets, bolts, and other small expendables. The condition will come with an airworthiness certification and teardown listing in detail what was done to the part and what piece parts were used in the repair.

Overhaul (OH)

Overhaul parts are the best of all these conditions and require the most work. When buying an overhaul part you can be sure that the unit will receive the 100% Overhaul kit according to the CMM (component maintenance manual) and any other components to bring it to overhaul condition. Overhauled parts are also often painted to make them appear as new. However, be aware that some MROs will tag a part as OH despite it not having proper certification and should really be considered repaired. MROs primarily do this so they can sell the part at a higher price because of its classification. This is frequently done with parts like pitot tubes and other accessories.

Different people will look at these conditions differently. Some people will never use a serviceable component, while others may prefer it. The part condition you need will often depend on your end use for the unit, as well as your ultimate priorities.
