About Woodward Inc.

The company has its roots tracing back as far as the 1870s when it was founded by Amos Woodward. The founder, in the earlier stages of his business ventures, initially made controls for waterwheels and then made controls by hydro turbines. He and his workers began designing controls for diesel engines, industrial turbines, and reciprocating engines throughout the 1920’s and 30’s. The advent of gas turbine engines for aircraft and industrial uses offered more opportunities for Woodward designed controls and governors. Years later, the founder was able to produce variable-pitch aircraft propellers, which eventually led to the production contract with the United States military. Woodward began designing analog and digital control units during this same time as well. Currently, Woodward’s governors, synchronizers, and synchrophasors are used on turboshaft, turboprop, and reciprocating engine aircraft. In 2008, Woodward acquired both MotoTron Corp and MPC Products, expanding their business. One of their most recent mergers include an agreement for Woodward to acquire a fuel injection systems technology company, L’Orange.

• Aviation & Defense: These products include fuel pumps, metering units, actuators, air valves, specialty valves, fuel nozzles, and thrust reverser actuation systems for turbine engines and nacelles, as well as flight deck controls, actuators, servocontrols, motors and sensors for aircraft.  They can be used on commercial and private aircraft, helicopters, military fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft, guided weapons, and other defense systems. Woodward manufactures components for an array of commercial aircraft, rotorcraft, and business jet platforms, such as the Airbus A320neo, Boeing 737 MAX and the 787, Bell 429 and Gulfstream G650. Woodward also utilizes their products for defense applications on Blackhawk and Apache helicopters, F/A-18 and F-35 fighter jets, and guided tactical weapons. Designs may also include systems/products for the management of fuel, air, fluids, gases, motion, combustion and electricity.  These products include actuators, valves, pumps, fuel injection systems, solenoids, ignition systems, speed controls, electronics and software, power converters, sensors, and other devices that measure, communicate, and protect electrical distribution systems. These products are used on industrial gas turbines (including heavy frame, aeroderivative and small industrial gas turbines), steam turbines, reciprocating engines (including low speed, medium speed and high speed engines, natural gas vehicles and diesel, heavy fuel oil and dual-fuel engines), electric power generation and power distribution systems, wind turbines, and compressors.
